A short defence of walking without a purpose, and of arriving later than you needed to.
What we lose when we stop being bored, and what a quiet afternoon can still teach us about attention.
We have optimised the way we look at the world, and we are beginning to notice what the optimisation removed.
On the seasons as instruments of attention, and the particular honesty of a low sun.
The lamp on my desk is a cheap thing, bought in a hurry from a shop that no longer exists. It has a crooked shade and a switch that requires a particular kind of patience.
I have tried to replace it twice. Both replacements were better in every measurable way: brighter, steadier, more efficient. Neither of them made the desk feel like a place to work. I gave them away.
There is a category of object that earns its place not by performing well but by having been present for a long time. The lamp is in that category. It is not a good lamp. It is my lamp.
The first ten minutes are unbearable. The mind, denied its usual soundtrack, starts looking for something to do and finds only the sound of its own complaining.
Then something shifts. The street becomes audible. A gate, a bicycle, a conversation in a language you do not speak. The world has been playing music this whole time and you had been drowning it out.
I do not think listening to music while walking is a vice. But I have started to notice how rarely I am anywhere without a layer between me and it. The headphones are a small, comfortable wall. Sometimes the wall is the point. Sometimes it is just a wall.
Rain on a window is one of the few things that improves with attention. Most spectacles shrink when you look closely. This one deepens: the track of a drop, the way it gathers others, the small decision at the sill.
I used to think weather was scenery. Now I think it is an instrument that plays on the body — a low string you feel before you hear. That is why the same room can feel generous in sun and accusing in rain.
Which is not a reason to move. It is a reason to notice what the room is doing to you, and to decide whether to agree.
